stay space (2024)
stay space is a kind of miniature version of my installation work SETTLING ROOTS, in which I reflect on my personal experience of Japanese-Finnish cultural identity, and the related experiences of rootlessness, belonging and not belonging. stay space seeks to explore these experiences in relation to the concept of home. The work considers questions of private and shared concrete and abstract space - a space filled with images, layers of time, memories, emotions and desires that perhaps take a more intelligible/perceivable form through some kind of concrete material and form, surfaces and objects.
Textile techniques: weaving, knotting, machine sewing.
Materials: own hair, wood, paper, linen yarn, fibers from invasive alien plants (such as Himalayan balsam and Canadian goldenrod).
Size: 50cm x 50cm x 50cm.
